Stories of Resilience Mark Huawei DigiTruck Graduation in Lamu

More than 140 young people graduated from the Huawei DigiTruck Programme in Lamu County on Monday, with stories of determination and resilience standing out during the ceremony held in Mokowe.

The graduates completed a five-week digital skills training programme aimed at equipping youth with ICT and digital literacy skills to improve opportunities in employment, entrepreneurship, and innovation.

Among those recognised during the graduation was Rose Waithera, a young mother who joined the programme while pregnant and continued with the training after giving birth.

Waithera said she returned to class after delivering her baby because she did not want to miss the opportunity to complete the course.

“Joining the Huawei DigiTruck programme gave me hope and confidence for my future,” she said during the graduation ceremony held at the Mokowe Kenya Maritime Authority Command Centre.

She added that travelling daily from Manga to Mokowe using two boats was a sacrifice she was willing to make to complete the training.

Another graduate, Simon Murimi, who is living with disabilities affecting his hands and legs, also completed the programme after attending all training sessions.

Murimi said the programme showed him that disability should not stop people from pursuing opportunities.

“These digital skills will help shape my future,” he said.

DigiTruck programme is delivered through a partnership between Huawei Kenya, the Lamu County Government, and Computers for Schools Kenya.

This digital skills training programme has reached youths in areas like Mokowe and Mpeketoni through training in digital literacy and ICT skills.

The graduation event had a representation from the Deputy Governor Mbarak Bahjaj, County Executive Committee Member for ICT Aisha Shariff Omar, other County officials, Huawei Kenya officials, and ICT sector stakeholders.

During the ceremony, Deputy Governor Bahjaj said that programmes like DigiTruck have a positive impact on youths by equipping them with the needed digital skills, thus creating chances for the communities residing in the remote regions.

In her speech, Khadija Mohammed, the Head of Huawei Public Affairs and Media Director, said that digital literacy has become one of the crucial skills in today’s digital economy where youths search for employment chances and engage in digital entrepreneurship through online means.

Huawei DigiTruck is described as a solar-powered mobile classroom that offers youths training in digital skills in areas which lack such facilities.

As stated by Huawei Kenya, Lamu becomes the 43rd county to receive this service under this program, which started in 2019. Over 10,000 young people have been trained under this program, with other counties such as Wajir and Garissa also receiving this service recently.
