Technopolis Development Authority Uses Drones to Restore Konza Wildlife Conservancy

The Technopolis Development Authority (formerly Konza Technopolis Development Authority) has successfully conducted a drone-enabled seedball broadcast at the Konza Technopolis Wildlife Conservancy in an initiative aimed at supporting environmental restoration, ecological regeneration and agricultural productivity through technology.

A total of 75 kilogrammes of seedballs were deployed by drones across targeted degraded savannah areas within the conservancy. According to the Authority, the exercise is among the first drone-assisted ecological restoration broadcasts carried out in a Kenyan urban-adjacent conservancy.

The seedballs contained three indigenous tree species: the wild olive, shittah tree and fever tree. Made from compacted charcoal, clay, dust and compost, the seed-bearing balls protect native seeds from predators, retain moisture and create a nutrient-rich environment that improves germination rates by up to 80 per cent compared to broadcasting bare seeds.

The exercise demonstrated how drone technology can improve the efficiency of landscape restoration by enabling the rapid and precise distribution of seedballs over large areas. The approach is expected to help increase vegetation cover, restore degraded land and support long-term environmental conservation efforts.

Speaking at the event Technopolis Development Authority Chief Manager Physical Planning Compliance and Environment, Annah Musyimi emphasised the importance of embracing new technologies as a catalyst for environmental conservation, sustainable natural resource management and biodiversity management.

“Technology is undoubtably a game changer and we as the Technopolis Development Authority have taken the lead in showcasing this. Today we have witnessed our drones deploy a total of 75kgs of seedballs which contain three different tree species over a total land area of 1000 acres in a matter of minutes. It is therefore key for not only us but majority of the conservation and agricultural sector to embrace technology to aid in productivity and development across our nation.”

The project underscore Konza’s growing importance as a national centre for innovation, research, and the application of technology-based solutions that advance Kenya’s development priorities.

The Konza Technopolis includes the Konza National Drone Corridor, which is the testing ground for all unmanned aerial systems (UAS) in the country. The Drone Corridor enables the testing and application of various kinds of drone technologies.

According to the Authority, the Drone Corridor has helped to position Kenya as an important player in terms of emerging technologies.

The Government of Kenya still encourages cooperation between government ministries and departments, research organizations, technology providers and local communities in order to introduce innovative agricultural methods and environmental conservation.
