The Controversial Church in Migori has come under intensified scrutiny as 57 of its followers remain in custody for an additional 30 days, following a ruling by Magistrate Susan Mutava on Thursday.

The faithful, linked to the Melkio St. Joseph Missions of Messaiha Afrika Church in Rongo, Migori County, are being investigated over alleged cultic practices.

“This matter is of great public concern, and the investigations must proceed unhindered to ensure justice is served,” Magistrate Mutava said in her ruling, granting the ODPP’s request for extended detention.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, speaking at a Jukwaa la Usalama forum, confirmed that two deaths had already been reported in connection with the church.

He warned that local administrators, including chiefs and assistant chiefs, would be held accountable for any lapses in intelligence gathering.

“This incident could have escalated into another Shakahola tragedy had the police not intervened swiftly,” he stated.

Authorities have described the church’s activities as radical and potentially dangerous. The detained followers, who insist they cannot return to their homes because “their only home is Jerusalem,” will be held across various police stations in Migori County.

The Controversial Church in Migori case has renewed calls for stringent oversight of religious institutions.

Murkomen noted that the Cabinet will soon review a report by the Mutava Musyimi-led task force on regulating religious groups. The report is expected to form the basis of a draft Bill to be tabled in Parliament.

As the investigation continues, pressure is mounting on the government to crack down on unregistered and rogue religious outfits preying on vulnerable communities.

The spotlight remains firmly on Migori County as the nation awaits further developments.
