There was a sense of pride and reflection as Smart Speak Toastmasters Club marked its 500th meeting on Friday, March 13, 2026, during a black-tie gala in Nairobi.
The event, dubbed “500 Smart Wins A Journey Through Time,” brought together current members, former leaders, invited guests and fellow Toastmasters to look back at how far the club has come.
The celebration was held at the Golden Tulip Hotel, with the evening built around what members know best—speaking, learning and sharing experiences.
The programme kept the usual Toastmasters style but with a more relaxed and celebratory feel. There were prepared speeches, a panel discussion, keynote talks and moments to recognise members who have played a role in growing the club.
Aggrey Anduuru and Mathew George took to the stage with speeches that mixed storytelling and humour, keeping the audience engaged. Later, David Gray led the Table Topics session, where speakers were put on the spot and had to respond without preparation, drawing both laughter and thoughtful responses from the room.
A panel discussion themed “500 Meetings Later: Lessons, Leadership & Legacy” stood out as one of the key moments of the night. Allan Aringo, Maryjka Beckmann, Gitonga M’Mbijjewe and Pari Lalani shared their experiences and reflections on the club’s journey. The session was moderated by Kanyiri Kariuki, the immediate former president, who kept the conversation flowing as panelists spoke about growth, leadership and lessons picked along the way.

There were also keynote addresses from Jagi Gakunju and Gitau Komu, who challenged members to keep pushing themselves as communicators and leaders even beyond the club.
At one point during the event, club leadership reflected on what the milestone means.
“Reaching 500 meetings is a testament to the resilience, consistency, and commitment of the Smart Speak community. Each meeting represents individuals stepping forward to grow, lead, and find their voice.”
The night closed with awards presented by DTM Michael Nawari, recognising members who have stood out over time. A cake-cutting ceremony followed, marking the milestone in a simple but symbolic way.
Smart Speak Toastmasters Club is part of Toastmasters International, a global network that focuses on helping people improve their communication and leadership skills. Over the years, the Nairobi-based club has drawn members from different fields, all looking to build confidence and grow.
Even as it celebrates this milestone, the focus remains on what comes next continuing to create a space where people can learn, speak and develop into better leaders.
