Tatu City, a rapidly developing city in the outskirts of Nairobi and ranked among Africa’s fastest-growing cities, launched its After-School Artificial Intelligence (AI) Program, a landmark move towards equipping young learners for the digital era.
The launch, under Tatu Reach the city’s Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) initiative also witnessed the graduation of the first group of students to complete a 13-week course in front-end web development and artificial intelligence.
Empowering Students for Tomorrow
The project targets students aged 14 to 15 years and introduces them to key concepts of digital competence and programming.
Through lessons of HTML, CSS, JavaScript and learning through projects, the students gained knowledge and competencies to create, build, and apply technology to situations in everyday life.
The first class had 20 students from Tatu Primary School, a government school in the city. The young coders spent three months learning creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking skills skills that would prepare them for technology careers ahead.
Here at Tatu City, we are preparing our community for the jobs of tomorrow,” confirmed Solomon Mahinda, Executive Vice President at Tatu City. “Our After-School AI Program provides young children with practical digital skills that will position them to engage in tomorrow’s economy.
With several data centers being set up here, offering hundreds of new opportunities for employment, we would like our community to be ready for them.
It was attended by the Ministry of Information, Communications and the Digital Economy (MoICDE) representatives, which is an indicator of the government’s drive towards the promotion of digital skills, innovation, and inclusion as core pillars of Kenya’s socio-economic development.
The success of the program is sustained through collaboration with several partners, which are Qhala, Power Learn Project Africa, Ngeda, Viking Cruises, and CCI Global. The partners enabled them to provide the curriculum, tutors, and equipment such as computers that ensured the initiative was a success.
A Broader Vision for Community Empowerment
Since 2023, the Tatu City Training Academy has offered complimentary vocational training to more than 600 nationals in careers including masonry, plumbing, steel fixing, and security. The launch of the AI program is an overwhelmingly giant step towards technology-driven learning, closing the digital gap, and capacity building of young learners.
Tatu Reach’s community development work more broadly continues to grow in strength. Its school feeding program has provided more than two million healthy meals to students attending state schools, while Tatu Rugby, one of its programs, teaches life skills and discipline through sport.
A Thriving Smart City
Tatu City is part of a group of seven cities developed by Rendeavour, Africa’s largest urban developer. The city currently welcomes over 25,000 residents, workers, and students daily, with investments of over KES 400 billion.
The growing business community boasts global and local names such as Heineken, CCI Global, Naivas, Emirates Logistics, Cold Solutions, FullCare Medical, Dormans, NCBA, and Davis & Shirtliff.
As Tatu City expands, its focus on education, technology, and social development makes it a blueprint for inclusive urban development where one learns in the classroom and extends throughout every urban aspect of life.
