Huawei’s Women-In-Tech Initiative Brings Together Experts to Mark International Day of Women and Girls in Science
In celebration of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science (IDWGIS), Huawei Kenya hosted the UniTech Talk, a high-impact forum aimed at enhancing the participation of young girls and women in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).
The event brought together industry leaders, policy makers, and aspiring female professionals to discuss mechanisms for increasing meaningful inclusion in STEM-related courses and careers.
Key discussions focused on assessing the gains, gaps, and opportunities in the sector. Panelists emphasized the need for mentorship and leadership development programs to guide young women in pursuing STEM careers.
Huawei highlighted its ongoing initiatives, such as DigiSchool, which connects schools to the internet and provides basic computer equipment to encourage early STEM engagement.
The event also showcased Huawei’s other programs, including the ICT Competition, DigiTruck, and the University Career Fair, which serve as platforms for recruiting and inspiring young girls in tech.
Notably, out of nearly 3,000 participants in this year’s Huawei ICT Competition, 960 (32%) were girls, with five qualifying for the Regional Finals set for March 2025 in South Africa.
Maggie, a key speaker at the event, underscored the importance of women’s participation in STEM as a strategic imperative rather than a compliance measure.
“We recognize that diversity is not just a clause it is a key driver of success. By partnering with universities and corporations, we aim to onboard more women and girls into STEM, ensuring a brighter future for all,” she said.
Hon. Harriet Chiggai echoed this sentiment, emphasizing Kenya’s digital transformation agenda as an avenue for equal opportunities in STEM.
“It is our time to innovate, lead, and break barriers,” she declared, encouraging young women to seize the available opportunities.
The forum served as a powerful reminder of the need to create an environment where women and girls can thrive in STEM, ultimately contributing to Kenya’s growing digital economy and fostering innovative solutions for the future.
