Safaricom will support the 2026 WRC Safari Rally Kenya with its technology and connectivity solutions, partnering with the rally as the official technology partner.

The plan is to extend network coverage in the areas the rally will pass through, particularly in Naivasha, which is the main spot where the action will take place.

Every year, the rally attracts thousands of fans in person, and millions also get to watch it online across the world.

To support the increased communication needs, Safaricom will set up Connectivity on Wheels (COWs), which are mobile network masts that will be deployed in the areas with the highest traffic. In addition, the company will also upgrade the 5G network in the main spot to support the live broadcast and streaming of the rally.

Media operations will also get a boost with the upgrade, with high-speed Wi-Fi services in the media centres and data bundles to support the media in the field, particularly in the areas that are not close to the main spot.

“The 2026 Safari Rally is expected to draw thousands of local and international fans, with millions more watching worldwide. Reliable connectivity will be crucial for live broadcasting, safety coordination, and fan engagement,” said Peter Ndegwa.

Apart from the connectivity, Safaricom will also introduce Internet of Things (IoT) technology to support the rally safety operations. The IoT system will be deployed in the vehicles in the safety caravan, which includes the ambulances and other emergency vehicles, to track the location of the vehicles in real-time in the event of an accident on the route of the rally.

Special data bundles will also be set up to allow fans across the country to get updates on the rally, particularly the live streaming of the activities.

The Safari Rally is one of the most popular rallies in Africa and is a staple in the World Rally Championship calendar, attracting competitors and fans from across the world.
