The government has announced plans to provide medical coverage under the Social Health Authority (SHA) to impoverished households nationwide.

This initiative, aimed at improving healthcare access for vulnerable populations, was revealed during a January 15, 2025, meeting between Principal Secretaries Joseph M. Motari of the State Department for Social Protection and Harry Kimtai of the State Department for Medical Services.

To fund the program, the government has allocated KES 950 million in the current financial year.

The initiative targets households unable to afford SHA premiums, with beneficiaries being identified through databases such as the Social Registry and the Inua Jamii cash transfer program.

The Social Registry currently records over 4.4 million households, while Inua Jamii supports 1.75 million individuals.

Eligible households will receive the SHA medical cover for 12 months, following a validation process.

This effort underscores the government’s commitment to reducing healthcare disparities and enhancing social protection for the most vulnerable communities.
