Ted Turner, the bold American media entrepreneur who founded the global news network CNN, has died at the age of 87.

His death was confirmed on Wednesday through a statement from Turner Enterprises, as reported by CNN. No cause of death was immediately given. However, Turner had disclosed in 2018 that he was living with Lewy body dementia, a progressive brain condition.

Turner was widely known for his larger-than-life personality and sharp business instincts, which helped him build one of the most influential media empires in the world. He earned several nicknames over the years, including “Captain Outrageous” and “Terrible Ted,” reflecting both his boldness and unconventional style.

He began his journey in business by taking over his father’s billboard advertising company before making a risky move into television in 1970. He bought a struggling station in Atlanta and turned it into a success through 24-hour, low-cost programming. This would later grow into a powerful media group.

In 1980, Ted Turner launched CNN, the world’s first 24-hour news channel, changing how news is reported and consumed globally. At the time, many doubted the idea would work, but the network went on to cover major global events, from wars and elections to disasters, setting the pace for modern news broadcasting.

Over the years, Turner expanded his empire to include sports, movies, and entertainment, eventually merging his company with Time Warner in 1996 in a deal that created one of the largest media companies in the world.

Apart from his involvement in business, Ted Turner was also involved in philanthropy and environmental causes. He gave away a billion dollars to assist the United Nations. In addition, he made huge investments in conservation projects. He once held one of the largest private lands in America.

Moreover, Turner loved sporting activities. He was an owner of sports clubs like the Atlanta Braves baseball team and Atlanta Hawks basketball team. Furthermore, he participated in sailing competitions, reaching top levels in the activity.

Notably, Turner had personal issues despite being a successful man. He struggled with depression. Furthermore, he was faced with problems in corporate governance following his withdrawal from managing his media company.

Nonetheless, his contributions to international media continue to have a lasting impact to date. The CNN, which he created, still exists as one of the world’s foremost news stations.

Ted Turner is survived by his children. His contributions towards changing modern-day broadcasting have earned him a place among the founding fathers of modern broadcasting.
