Gov’t Urges Tech Sector to Build Digital Skills That Create Jobs

The government now wants players in Kenya’s tech industry to focus more on building digital skills that match real-world needs especially for young people leaving training programs.

During a graduation ceremony for over 400 youth under the DigiTalent Programme, officials said the country’s digital future depends on how well young people are prepared, not just to take up jobs but to create them.

They pointed to the Digital Master Plan 2022–2032, which outlines how the government hopes to train and support a new wave of tech talent through partnerships with private firms.

One official said that talent development is now a key pillar, not just in the digital master plan but also in Kenya’s AI strategy and other policies in the tech space.

Graduates were reminded that the training they’ve received especially from industry partners is meant to open doors, not just offer certificates.

They were encouraged to take what they’ve learned and build businesses or innovations that can grow into something bigger.

There was also a call for mentorship and continued support, especially as digital opportunities expand. Certified programs run in partnership with companies like Huawei were singled out as having made a difference, particularly for young people just starting out in tech.

One partner in the program said the goal is to make sure Kenya’s digital growth is powered by local talent not outsourced skills. The graduates, they added, are part of that mission.
