In a move that propels youths into the digital economy, 250 have successfully graduated from a digital skills training program under the DigiTruck Digital Literacy Initiative, an initiative aimed at improving the employability and innovation capacities of the youth within Kenya.
The trainees were able to learn on such topics as basic ICT skills, cybersafety, and innovation using ICT. The main target for this learning opportunity is individuals who have left form four or are job seekers and are therefore restricted in accessing formal learning to enhance their knowledge in today’s increasingly technology-dependent job market.
DigiTruck Digital Literacy Initiative Empowers Local Youth
The graduation procession was chaired by the Member of Parliament of Dagoreti North, Hon. Beatrice Elachi, and was attended by local leaders and implementation partners, who praised the DigiTruck Digital Literacy Initiative for unlocking digital potential to create actual opportunities.
“This graduation marks a transition from potential to possibility. Digital skills are no longer a choice but a necessity if one wants to access job opportunities, build a business, or thrive in the international economy,” said Hon. Elachi. “With our DigiTruck Digital Literacy Initiative, our youth are acquiring skills, attitude, and mind-set for improving livelihoods and their communities,”

DigiTruck Digital Literacy Initiative is being implemented by Huawei Technologies in its continued efforts towards ensuring digital inclusion in support of the digital transformation agenda in Kenya. This is accomplished by overcoming various constraints associated with digital literacy programs in the community.
Speaking during the event, Huawei Technologies Kenya Director of Public Affairs Yuta Leng noted that the program is organized in a way that it has tangible results outside the classroom.
“Digital inclusion must mean something if it’s going to mean something,” Leng observed. “In going into these communities and offering skills training, the DigiTruck digital literacy initiative means young people can translate what they know into something that gets them into the digital economy and participate actively.”
DigiTruck itself serves as a solar-powered mobile classroom that features laptops and high-speed internet access. By this unique distribution channel, the DigiTruck Digital Literacy Initiative is able to serve those in underserved communities across the country through bridging the gap that exists in digitization.
Since its inception, the DigiTruck Digital Literacy Initiative has managed to train thousands of Kenyan individuals, thereby impacting the employability and youth entrepreneurship and economic growth sectors. Interestingly, the initiative also fits well into the Kenyan government’s vision for a future-ready workforce and a digitally enabled society.
