The Wang’uru International Stadium came alive this past Sunday as thousands of spectators from all corners of Mwea gathered to witness the grand finale of the Mary Maingi Super Cup Football Tournament Season 2.
What began as a grassroots sporting idea has now blossomed into one of the most anticipated community events in Kirinyaga County, and this year’s edition lived up to every bit of the hype.
With 90 teams participating from across the constituency, the tournament brought together not just athletes but entire communities.
The passion was evident in the roaring fans, the determination on the pitch, and the smiles that lit up the stadium as people united around a shared love for football.
Every goal, tackle, and cheer echoed the spirit of Mwea resilient, vibrant, and full of promise.
The men’s third-place playoff saw Ndorome edge out Murubara with a convincing 2-0 win.
In the women’s final, Kutus Queens and Mukou Queens battled to a 1-1 draw in regular time, but it was Kutus Queens who held their nerve, clinching victory 5-4 in a tense penalty shootout.
The men’s final between Kinyaga and Kiriko ended in similar fashion 1-1 after full-time before Kiriko emerged victorious in a dramatic 7-6 penalty shootout. The celebrations that followed were nothing short of electric.
But the day was about more than just football. The air buzzed with music and laughter, thanks to high-energy performances by Wadagliz, known for their hit “Anguka Nayo,” and Joyce Wa Mama, whose Mugithi beats had the crowd dancing with joy. It felt more like a festival than a tournament, with families, youth, and elders all coming together for a common purpose.

In her closing remarks, Mwea Member of Parliament Hon. Mary Maingi expressed heartfelt appreciation for everyone who had made the tournament a success. She spoke directly to the youth, urging them to remain focused and to believe in their potential.
“Season 2 of this tournament has shown us what is possible when we invest in our young people,” she said. “Football has brought us together. It has shown us that unity, peace, and hard work can shape a better Mwea.”
Hon. Maingi also acknowledged the crucial backing from the President, the Deputy President, and Kirinyaga County leaders, whose support she said had made it easier to nurture local talent and organize such a meaningful event.
She promised that this was just the beginning and hinted that Season 3 would be even bigger and better.
Government officials, including Mwea East Deputy County Commissioner Fred Ayieko, were also in attendance.
Ayieko praised the initiative, calling it a powerful tool in the fight against drug abuse and a great example of how structured youth engagement can have lasting impact.
As the sun set over Wang’uru, one thing was clear the Mary Maingi Super Cup Football Tournament had done more than crown new champions.
It had brought people together, celebrated talent, and reminded everyone of the magic that happens when a community believes in its youth. And if the energy from this year’s finals is anything to go by, the future of football and Mwea is brighter than ever.
