More than 300 young people at the University of Eldoret have received training on content creation and money management, after Safaricom and Sprite took their Hook’d on Fresh Masterclass Series to the campus.
The session, held on Friday, is part of an ongoing programme targeting youth across the country, with a focus on helping them understand how to create content and earn from it, while also building basic financial skills.
During the training, participants interacted with industry players, including musician Collo Blue and dance creator Tileh Pacbro, who shared their personal experiences in the digital space.
For many students, the session was an eye-opener.
“I am happy that Safaricom and Sprite have brought this masterclass to our University today. I have learned that in addition to entertainment, platforms like Safaricom Hook are also useful in studies and research, because of the affordable Internet bundles,” said Norman Kipkurgat, a second-year student.
The Eldoret visit comes just days after a similar event at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), which marked the first stop of the programme.
Safaricom says the initiative is meant to give young people practical skills they can use to grow in the digital space.
“The Hook’d on Fresh campaign is a digital influencer hosted creator program designed to equip Kenyan creators with the skills, tools and inspiration they need to thrive in the digital content economy. Today, we’ve also have been speaking to the youth about the importance of adopting a saving culture early, educating them on the diverse opportunities in tech and digital space,” said Fawzia Ali, Chief Consumer Business Officer at Safaricom.
Organisers say the masterclasses will continue in other universities, with a mix of training on digital skills and exposure to tools that can support young people’s daily hustle.
At the same time, the two brands have launched an online challenge targeting young creators across the country. Participants are being asked to post short videos on platforms like TikTok and Instagram using the hashtags #Hook’donfresh and #SafaricomHook.
The challenge will see hundreds of creators win different prizes, including cash, smartphones and data bundles, with winners to be picked every month.
The programme combines digital skills training with basic financial knowledge, in what organisers say is an effort to better prepare young people for opportunities in the growing online economy.
