Safaricom has reiterated its commitment to empower drivers and motorists across the country by organizing a special empowerment meet to enhance the safety of the mobility workforce of Safaricom.
This event was conducted in partnership with the taxi-hailing companies to bring together the transport drivers, users, as well as key stakeholders in the transport sector to help transport workers optimize their incomes, health, and financial safety.
This event was part of the greater Shangwe @25 celebrations, marking the 25 years of impact and innovation by Safaricom in the country of Kenya.
Safaricom Mobility Workforce Launched as the Centre of the Empowerment Campaign
Over 200 stakeholders, including motorcyclists, car and motorbike owners, and supporters of taxi-booking companies, among them DTB Bank, Turaco, NTSA, Centonomy, and Vivo Energy Kenya, among other stakeholders, participated in the event.
They were able to take advantage of services targeted at the needs of the mobility workforce for Safaricom, including free health checks, vehicle analysis, financial advisory sessions, and other engagements by partners aimed at fostering personnel and professional development.
During the event, Safaricom’s Chief Consumer Business Officer, Fawzia Ali Kimanthi, said, “Drivers and riders have an important role to play in ensuring the movement of our cities in Kenya.”
“We believe drivers and riders represent the spine of Kenya’s mobility industry, and their activity keeps our cities alive. By introducing Bundle Ya Deree and Ofa Ya Boda, we’re providing solutions designed to keep them connected, healthy, and financially secure. It’s a way for us to engage with this group of consumers even more deeply.” She explained.
Tailored Solutions for the Safaricom Mobility Workforce
Safaricom’s Bundle Ya Deree package provides a pre-paid bundled package of values at a premium fee of KES 500 per week to KES 2,000 per month.

The package provides for data and voice minutes, insured benefits of KES 30,000 for inpatient care, KES 100,000 for burial, and KES 15,000 for accident refund payments. In addition, drivers get a fuel rebate of KES 2 per litre at Shell petrol stations on each Friday of every week.
On the other hand, Ofa Ya Boda offers flexible tariffs from KES 50 to KES 1,000, with data, Kredo, rider app and Google Maps access, as well as insurance at reduced rates specifically suited for boda boda riders.
Safaricom indicated the devices were created for the purpose of offering affordability, reliability, and necessary safety for the employees working within the Safaricom mobility employee base, who depend on such services for their livelihood.
For most participants, the event was both useful and affirmative. Raphael Masica, a cab driver in Nairobi, explained the move was necessary and related to the many experiences he goes through on daily driving.
“Being connected and protected is vital for us as drivers. Bundle Ya Deree has really helped me, especially with the data and the support offered for the insurance. To get Safaricom coming to us, listening to us, and celebrating us through this festival shows that they really understand what we go through on a daily basis. This goes on to inspire us to continue providing our clients with safe services,” said Masica.
Increasing Support for the Safaricom Mobility Workers According to Safaricom, the Drivers and Riders Festival was meant to promote the usage of the Bundle Ya Deree and the Ofa ya Boda through addressing the needs of the drivers and motorcyclists.
Through providing avenues for engagement, learning, and direct support, the corporation seeks to endow the total Safaricom mobility workforce with a better understanding of the value embedded in these services while continually expressing its commitment to their connectivity, safety, and financial wellbeing.
Safaricom observed that as the mobility ecosystem in Kenya continues to develop, the long-term support of motorists and commuters is still a pressing requirement towards facilitating a growth that is felt by everyone within the transport industry.
