Rosatom State Atomic Energy Corporation put the spotlight on its Floating Nuclear Power Units (FNPUs) at the Enlit Africa 2025 conference held in Cape Town, South Africa, from May 20 to 22.
The global nuclear energy giant used its exhibition space to introduce African leaders and energy experts to its latest innovations, including the RITM-200 reactor model and uranium extraction solutions. The presentation focused heavily on the benefits of Floating Nuclear Power Units a flexible, clean, and efficient energy solution designed for regions with limited infrastructure.
One of the standout moments was a panel titled “80 Years of Russian Nuclear Legacy: Powering Africa’s Sustainable Future with Floating Nuclear Units,” which featured voices from South Africa, Ghana, and Russia. Experts discussed how FNPUs could bridge Africa’s power gap, especially in remote or coastal areas.
“Floating power units are a unique solution for Africa’s specific challenges. They’re clean, stable, and well-suited for both cities and off-grid areas,” said Vladimir Aptekarev of Rosatom’s Mechanical Engineering Division.
Vadim Titov, Director General of the Rosatom International Network, added that Rosatom is committed to long-term partnerships with African nations, saying, “We offer flexible and sustainable nuclear energy solutions that could transform Africa’s energy future.”
This year marks two key milestones 80 years of Russia’s nuclear industry and 60 years of South Africa’s SAFARI-1 reactor reflecting a long history of peaceful nuclear cooperation between the two countries.
