OpenAI secured a landmark partnership worth US $4.6 Billion (AU $7 Million) with Nextdc to open a new “hyperscale” AI hub in Sydney. This deal represents a major change in how digital infrastructure across the Asia-Pacific will operate.
The primary emphasis of the agreement is to create a unique facility in Western Sydney. Unlike conventional data centres, the new facility will host a “GPU supercluster,” specifically designed to support training for the world’s largest and most sophisticated AI models.
This distinction is of extreme importance for investors in the technology sector. In other words, this new facility represents a shift from just data storage facilities to facilities focusing on high-performance computing. It will serve as a significant driver of the global AI economy from Australia.
Securing National Data Sovereignty
A critical driver of value for a project like this one is the value associated with having “sovereign compute capability.” “Sovereign compute capability” means an ability for sensitive data not to leave the borders of Australia.
By providing this capability, the project opens the door to many sectors that otherwise have regulatory hurdles to using AI (e.g., defence and finance).
Robust local support for government and enterprise requirements has been a key theme from Craig Scroggie, CEO of Nextdc, during conversations about the project.
Having this facility will significantly reduce the extent to which critical national infrastructure is reliant on offshore processing.
Revolutionising Green Tech Standards
The global impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI), with respect to energy consumption, is a major issue. This project specifically addresses these issues through innovations in cooling technologies, including next-generation cooling systems designed to utilize no potable water.
In addition, the facility will have access to long-term renewable energy power purchase agreements to further reduce the carbon footprint associated with training large scale models and utilize Australia’s plentiful opportunities for generating solar and wind energy as a competitive advantage.
Economic Impact & Job Creation to Labour Market
The economic ripple effect will be immediate and have a significant impact on the community. Authorities estimate that thousands of jobs will be created through the construction phase of this project. These jobs include specialized positions associated with engineering, manufacturing, and technical operations.
The announcement of the deal was welcomed by Treasurer Jim Chalmers as an endorsement of local skills, and performed as an example of Australia’s ability to create “policy settings” to make it a “winner.”
The primary emphasis will now be focused on up-skilling of the workforce in relation to the operation of this infrastructure.
Market Response & Future Opportunities
Shares of NextDC rose rapidly after the announcement of the partnership, signaling a positive investor reaction to the news. This agreement serves as validation of the long-term profitability of AI-ready physical assets.
The objective of this partnership is to create an Australian ‘OpenAI for Australia’ initiative that creates local AI ecosystems comparable to the United States and Europe.
This will allow Australia to be ready for future technology advancements.
