A story of resilience, empowerment, and hope unfolded during a free medical camp provided by the M-PESA Foundation in partnership with the Makueni County Government.

The camp drew attention to central concerns of women’s health like prenatal care, antenatal check-ups, and child clinics which are sorely lacking in the region and need to be served.

Among the mobilizers was Mary who stood out because of her inspiring journey as a health provider and mentor mother, she brought a unique perspective to the event.

Mary, who is a Community Health Provider (CHP) and mentor mother, is a light of hope for many women.

As a health advocate, Mary uses her story to inspire and empower women to prioritize their health and well-being.

“I share my story because I want women to see that living HIV positive is possible. My journey is proof that health challenges do not define one’s future,” said Mary.

Mary’s inspiring journey as an HIV-positive mother who is successfully raising an HIV-negative child highlights the critical role of accessible healthcare services in transforming lives.

Her story demonstrates how proper medical support, such as prenatal and antenatal checkups, can prevent mother-to-child transmission of HIV, ensuring healthy outcomes for both mother and child.

She played a critical role in mobilizing the community, explaining the significance of the camp and encouraging women to access the services offered.

In her daily work, she leads health awareness campaigns, facilitates cervical cancer screenings, supports immunization drives among women, and offers counseling for those facing health challenges.

“It’s about creating safe spaces for women to talk openly about their health. We mobilize, counsel, and ensure they understand that they’re not alone,” Mary explained.

Despite progress, persistent misconceptions about women’s health remain in Makueni. Mary notes that some community members still hold onto cultural myths that discourage women from seeking reproductive health services.

“Some beliefs that women shouldn’t use family planning because it may reduce their sexual activity, causing friction in marriages. Such misconceptions hold women back from prioritizing their health,” she noted.

With Safaricom technology medical camp was promoted through Safaricom SMS, provided a rare opportunity for many residents and attracted large numbers due to its accessibility and affordability.

People came in large numbers, seeking services like cervical cancer screenings, general consultations, dental care, and more.

Accessibility and affordability made all the differenceMary stressed the importance of continuous support for women’s health.

Sharing her personal story motivates others to believe in a future where women can overcome health challenges and lead fulfilling lives.

“When advising and counseling women I tell them my story to motivate, encourage and let them know that I’ve walked this journey. If I can live a healthy life and raise a healthy family, so can they. We connect them with peer support groups, ensure they follow medical advice, and help them overcome barriers like stigma and cost,” she shared.

Power of Partnerships.

Mary emphasized how important partnerships like the one with M-PESA Foundation are important in the community.

“With global funding for health programs shrinking, local collaborations like this one are essential. This camp gave us women the chance to know our health status. We hope Mpesa Foundation and partners will continue supporting such initiatives,” she said.

Mary’s life stands as a testimony in advancing women’s health. Her story is a reminder that with the right support, women can thrive, build healthy families, and inspire communities.

In addition, her journey proves that with knowledge, support, and access to the right medical care, women can overcome health challenges and lead empowered lives.
