The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) has demanded the immediate release of names of all police officers interdicted over the arrest and death of Albert Ojwang, whose case has sparked national outrage.
LSK President Faith Odhiambo, speaking on Monday, called on Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja to disclose the identities of those suspended. “We want to know who these officers are,” she said. “The ones who picked up Albert Ojwang are they part and parcel of those interdicted?”
Ojwang, arrested in Homa Bay and later transferred to Nairobi, died in custody under suspicious circumstances.
Odhiambo termed the operation “opaque and deeply troubling,” adding that secrecy undermines public trust.
She further criticized detainee mistreatment, pointing to Nairobi’s Central Police Station as emblematic of police brutality. Though the IG has ordered the interdiction of several officers, including the OCS and duty staff, no names have been released.
The LSK has urged the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) to ensure a transparent investigation. “Justice must be served not just for Albert Ojwang, but for all victims of police abuse,” Odhiambo said.
Civil society groups have echoed the call, warning that failure to act will deepen the public’s crisis of confidence in the police.
