A young skater from Kenya is in the news for having won gold and silver medals in the International Challenge Cotonou Speed and Inline Freestyle Skating Championship in Benin, West Africa, having represented his country alone and paid for the trip himself.
Kelvin Kiarie Ruhiu, a previous student at the Technical University of Kenya, earned gold medals in the Freestyle Battle and silver medals in the Classic Slalom category.
Clips of the proud athlete’s return and videos of his performance during the tournament have been flooding all social media networks, receiving many likes, shares, and positive comments on his determination.
Reportedly, Kelvin had paid for his travel costs out of pocket despite going to represent his nation in Benin alone.
He had not received any financial support either from the Ministry of Sports or its Cabinet Secretary in charge of the sports department.
