
As African leaders gather in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea to share their vision for the continent, IGAD Executive Secretary H.E. Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu is among the leading voices participating in the 7th African Union Mid-Year Coordination Meeting, taking place from 10–13July 2025.
With the aim of advancing the region’s strategic priorities incluiding multilateralism, peace and security, trade, gender equality, youth empowerment, and sustainable development H.E. Dr. Workneh will be leading the IGAD delegation to this high-level forum.
As Chair of the Inter-REC Coordination Platform, Dr. Workneh will also host a dedicated meeting of the RECs to discuss shared challenges and opportunities for collaboration.

The session will include update on progress made during IGAD’s chairmanship of the Platform, with a focus on strengthening inter-REC cooperation, streamlining institutional coordination, and amplifying Africa’s collective voice in global governance.
The Mid-Year Coordination Meeting serves as a key platform for aligning the efforts of the African Union, Regional Economic Communities (RECs), and Member States under the AU’s institutional reform agenda and Agenda 2063.
Speaking ahead of the meetings, Dr. Workneh reaffirmed IGAD’s commitment to continental integration and regional transformation.
“This gathering represents Africa’s united effort to shape its future through coordinated action, regional solidarity, and inclusive development. IGAD remains fully committed to fostering collaboration across RECs and aligning with the AU’s vision for a prosperous, integrated, and peaceful Africa.” he stated.
IGAD’s participation highlights its ongoing leadership support in regional integration efforts, and its commitment in supporting African institutions to deliver results that improve the lives of citizens across the continent.
