Bondo United, Magina Girls Shine at Tujiamini Cheza Dimba Nyanza Tournament

Siaya County’s Bondo United FC and Magina Girls were Tujiamini Cheza Dimba Nyanza regional tournament winners sponsored by SportPesa after an exhilarating weekend at the Raila Odinga Stadium in Homa Bay.

The tournament, which was one of the broader Tujiamini Cheza Dimba Nyanza series of grassroots football tournaments, brought the region’s best teams together for a day of spirit, talent, and energy.

In the men’s finale, Bondo United beat Awendo FC of Migori 1-0 following sustained pressure through attacking that caused an own goal by Clinton Ochieng in the 32nd minute.

The victory wrapped up a commanding performance by Bondo United, whose unity and composure took charge of most of the match.

Magina Girls of Siaya completed a tightly fought 1-0 win over Masosa Starlets of Nyamira in the ladies’ competition, with Scolastica delivering the decisive goal in the 16th minute following her precise cutting across the defence.

It was a tough match because our opponents were really tough,” Magina Girls’ Nora Peter explained. “We had some opportunities that we missed, but we stayed focused, kept driving, and ultimately registered the objective that we desired. This win comes at a perfect time for us, and we’re really thankful to SportPesa for starting the Tujiamini program that supports grassroots clubs like ours.”.

The Tujiamini Cheza Dimba Nyanza tournament saw Bondo United taking home KES 250,000 annually for three years, home and away kits, and Magina Girls claiming a KES 50,000 one-time award to help recover the cost of training gear.

Both teams also stood to benefit from a three-year mentorship project under SportPesa’s Tujiamini scheme, which seeks to nurture grass roots football talent and establish new pathways for youth players.

“These kind of tournaments are crucial for football at grassroots level here in mashinani,” Bondo United coach Eric Tutem stated. “The cash award will help us prepare for the Division One league. I truly appreciate SportPesa for providing the players with such exposure and confidence.”

The Tujiamini Cheza Dimba Nyanza regional finals saw eight teams six men and two women compete for the title in a vibrant crowd that filled the stadium with an ocean of cheers, music, and festivities.

Besides the football, the day was also marking the celebration of the winners of the Tujiamini Community Award, awarding remarkable individuals who are bringing a change to their societies.

Gold Award: Jacob Omulo of Nyorwa CBO (Homa Bay) was awarded KES 1 million for empowering widows and individuals with disabilities with agribusiness.

Silver Awardees: Joash Ochieng of *Girwa Radio 99.5 FM, Joseph Okal, a national triathlete, and John Apollo, organizer of the Nyanza Badminton Open Tournament, each received KES 100,000 for sports and community contribution.

Bronze Winners: 50 change-makers were given KES 10,000 each and presented with “Kwa Ground” Bronze Awards.

“Tujiamini is not just a platform it’s a movement that inspires people to believe in themselves,” said Japhet Akhulia, SportPesa Head of Partnerships and Sponsorships. “Every leg, including Tujiamini Cheza Dimba Nyanza, reminds us that when opportunity meets belief, incredible things happen.”

The Tujiamini Cheza Dimba tournament then shifts to Bomet on November 15, 2025, where eight more teams will battle for regional dominance towards the national finals.
