The Githunguri Avocado Cooperative Society (GAS) launching will be held on September 12, 2025, at the Githunguri Stadium, where the new offices shall officially be opened.
Launching will bring together farmers, agribusiness players, financial institutions, and other actors in the agricultural sector.
The cooperative brings together scores of avocado farmers from Githunguri and the region. It seeks to improve livelihood by providing farmers with a structured avenue to access more profitable markets, technical expertise, and financing.
Launching is one of the key steps towards empowering regional farmers and placing Kiambu at the heart of Kenya’s fast-growing avocado industry.
The cooperative, as seen by the organizing committee, will help the small-scale farmers to bridge poor market access limitation, post-harvest loss, and poor bargaining power. Farmers will be strategically placed to gain from both local and international avocado markets under one umbrella.
Githunguri MP Hon. Gathoni Wamuchomba, the initiative’s long-time ally, was also welcoming the news. “This cooperative is a dream come true for our farmers. It will open new windows of better markets and skills training, alongside enhancing livelihoods and developing the agricultural backbone of Githunguri. I am happy to step forward with our farmers on this journey,” she added.
The event has drawn great interest from the stakeholders like the Githunguri Constituency Office, Githunguri Dairy Cooperative (GDC), Equity Bank Githungui branch, Nova Garden Limited, Komothai Coffee Growers Society, Avocado Farmers Producer Association, Safi Fresh Fruits Limited, Edufruqt Fresh Ltd, Bank of Africa, Sakifarm Ltd, Fresh Produce Consortium, Purevado, and Keitt, among others.
The launch will also include exhibitions, partner networking, and forums to inform farmers about present ways of farming, value addition, and export markets. More than 1,000 stakeholders, such as farmers, agribusiness investors, and government representatives, are expected.
The launch of the cooperative comes at a time when Kenya is one of the world’s leading avocado exporters, with cooperatives playing a significant role in quality, pooled marketing, and environmental sustainability in agriculture.
