Acquisition of Versace by Prada Group
Prada Group has acquired Versace, one of the world’s leading luxury fashion brands, from Capri Holdings, for a total transaction value of €1.25 billion (approximate US$1.37 billion).
This acquisition represents a major milestone in the evolution of the global luxury market as the combined brands will have strong synergies across production, marketing, distribution, and design, and will provide an opportunity to create a more powerful global presence for the new business entity.
As a result of the completion of the acquisition, Prada Group has now become the exclusive ownership of the Versace brand and will be able to build upon Versace’s legacy of bold design and the iconic Medusa logo.
By combining the brand with its existing portfolio of high-end brands including Prada and Miu Miu. It is anticipated that as a combined group, the Prada Group will further bolster the position of Italian-based luxury brands against French-owned conglomerates such as LVMH and Kering.
The Cost and New Leadership
The acquisition of Versace by Prada Group for €1.25 Billion reflects Prada’s desire to harness what they consider “significant untapped growth potential” for the Versace brand and market.
Versace is still a highly esteemed global name; however, it is believed that Versace had reached its peak in terms of financial success since the end of the Pandemic following Capri Holdings acquisition.
As part of the restructuring process, Prada Group has appointed Lorenzo Bertelli, son of the founder, to the Executive chairman position of Versace. Mr Bertelli will lead a team in order to maximize the potential of Versace through leveraging Prada’s well-established supply chain and manufacturing capabilities.
The brand’s Chief Creative Officer, Donatella Versace has declared that this acquisition is a tremendous opportunity for Versace to move forward and create an even greater legacy that her brother established and devoted his life to create.
“Today is your day and the day Versace joins the Prada family. I am thinking of the smile you would have had on your face,” Donatella shared in a tribute to her late brother, Gianni Versace.
Why Capri Holdings chose to sell
The sale of Capri Holdings will be a strategic turnabout for the organization. After the purchase of Versace for $2 billion in 2018, Capri struggled to profit from that brand with the pressure of increasing debt obligations on their balance sheet (i.e., to maximize the profitability of the brand).
The funds received from the €1.25 billion sale will be utilized to reduce the debt obligations and allow Capri Holdings to focus on stabilizing and growing the remaining brands (i.e., Michael Kors and Jimmy Choo).
What This Means
With the addition of Versace to its portfolio, Prada Group is both expanding its revenue base and establishing an Italian luxury ecosystem capable of dominating both the ‘quiet luxury’ and ‘maximalist’ segments of the luxury market.
