Safaricom, in partnership with Huawei, has launched VybCall, Kenya’s first-ever Video Ring Back Tone (VRBT) service, adding a visual twist to the traditional caller experience.
The new feature, built on the legacy of the popular Skiza service introduced nearly two decades ago, allows users to entertain their callers with short-form video clips while waiting for the call to be answered.
With this launch, Kenya becomes the first African country to roll out VRBT technology, marking a major step in the evolution of mobile entertainment.
“At Safaricom, we’re always exploring new ways to give customers choice and control through creative experiences,” said James Maitai, Safaricom’s Chief Technology Information Officer (CTIO). “The launch of Kenya’s first Video Ring Back Tone service is another way we’re transforming everyday moments while reinforcing our commitment to innovation.”
VybCall is currently available on the Safaricom Neon range, select Samsung and Oppo models, and Xiaomi’s Redmi A series. Support for Vivo devices is expected in the second quarter of 2026.

Customers can activate the service by dialling *860# on compatible devices or through the Safaricom App via vybcall.safaricom.com.
“VybCall will also create new opportunities for Kenya’s creative community,” said Gavin Gao, Huawei Kenya CEO. “It’s one of the many ways Huawei continues to collaborate with partners to deliver innovations that enhance customer experience and drive economic growth.”
Since its introduction almost 20 years ago, Skiza has been a household name, allowing users to share their favourite tunes with callers.
With changing content trends and the rise of short-form video globally, Safaricom is reimagining how users can express themselves and stay connected.
Beyond entertainment the new service also opens up monetisation opportunities through content customisation, giving individuals and businesses a fresh way to engage audiences and even turn caller wait time into a marketing moment.
The introduction of VRBT underscores Safaricom’s continued investment in improving customer experiences and shaping Kenya’s growing digital landscape.
