Five bright Kenyan university students are back home after an eye-opening week in China, where they joined Huawei’s Seeds for the Future program a global initiative blending cutting-edge tech training with cultural exchange and mentorship
The week-long event, held from July 21 to 25, brought together outstanding students from countries like Brazil, Portugal, Madagascar, Namibia, and Côte d’Ivoire.
For the Kenyan team, it was more than just a learning experience it was a glimpse into the future of global technology.
The five students Shem Machii Ngunjiri (Dedan Kimathi University of Technology), Sophy Cherono Rop (USIU–Africa), Huldah Mwihaki Kaura (JKUAT), Mungai Erick Gachuhi (Moi University), and Samuel Ochor Ogeno (University of Nairobi) were selected for their passion for innovation and their potential to lead in the digital space.
Throughout the program, they dove into emerging tech fields including Artificial Intelligence, 5G, Smart Cities, and Cloud Computing.
They weren’t just learning theory they were hands-on, exploring how these tools are being used in real-world projects at Huawei’s R&D centers and innovation labs.
Among the standout moments was a visit to the Smart Government Showcase in Longgang and a tour of DJI’s headquarters the world leader in drone technology. It was the kind of experience most students only read about in textbooks.
But what made the program special was how it blended learning with inspiration.
“A seed begins in the dark unseen, uncertain, but full of potential,” said Samuel Ochor during the closing ceremony. “Huawei Seeds for the Future gave us the light and the ground to grow.”
For Huldah Kaura, it was the global conversations that left a lasting impression.
“Meeting students and experts from all over the world opened my mind to what’s possible. Innovation is truly borderless.”
Beyond the tech and training, the students immersed themselves in Chinese culture from sharing local meals to exploring the country’s rich history and making friends that may last a lifetime.
They also walked away with something tangible: a certificate of completion, a powerful addition to their academic journey and future careers.
As they settle back into university life in Kenya, the students carry with them a deeper understanding of technology and how it can solve real problems.
Huawei’s Seeds for the Future program, now in its 2025 edition, continues to plant the ideas and opportunities that will shape tomorrow’s tech leaders.
