Education in Mathare is taking a significant step forward with the construction of a permanent school building for the Roots Institute Centre, a community- based school providing free education to children in one of Nairobi’s most underserved areas.
The project, which has received strong backing from the French Embassy and other partners, will replace the current iron-sheet structures with a safer, more dignified space for over 450 learners.
Roots Institute Centre has served the Kosovo area of Mathare since 2013 one of Nairobi’s largest and most unprivileged informal settlements, offering free early childhood and primary education, daily meals, life skills training, and scholarships.
Despite the tough conditions, Roots Institute Centre continues to be a safe space for children who would otherwise miss out on school.
A brief cocktail reception was recently held at the French Ambassador’s residence to celebrate this important milestone and the growing collaboration behind it.
The new facility will accommodate up to 600 students, providing proper classrooms, sanitation, and recreational areas a vital investment in the future of education in Mathare.
